FAMILIES AND CARETAKERS
Everything you need to stay in the loop

Online learning works best when students, teachers, Local Facilitators, and families stay connected. Here’s how to check in, when to reach out, and who to contact first.
Before you email us: most questions are answered right on this page and the FAQ. Email is best kept for things specific to your own child’s enrolment.
Eligibility: NBVLC courses are only available to students registered in a New Brunswick Anglophone School District high school.
HOW ONLINE LEARNING WORKS
Four people, one loop of communication.
Online learning at NBVLC is structured and teacher-guided — not independent study. Here’s what each person does, and what it means for you.

Student
Logs in regularly, completes work, asks questions, submits original work.
For you
Your child stays responsible for staying engaged and communicating when support is needed.

Online Teacher
Teaches the course, gives feedback, marks work, monitors progress.
For you
Contact the OT for course-specific questions or concerns.

Local Facilitator
Provides in-school support, helps with supervised assessments.
For you
Contact the home school if your child needs local, in-person support.

Parent / Caretaker
Monitors progress, encourages routines, reaches out early.
For you
A short weekly Brightspace check-in can prevent small issues becoming big ones.
Monitoring progress
Brightspace gives you the clearest day-to-day picture.
Check Brightspace regularly for the most current view of any course — PowerSchool updates on its own official reporting schedule, so the two work well together.
GRADES
Current mark
Assignment breakdown and teacher feedback, updated as work is graded.

When things get off track
Falling behind is usually about missing work — not ability.
Online learning takes strong time management. Here’s what typically happens, and how it gets fixed.
PROGRESS REPORTS
You’ll hear from us — but you don’t have to wait
Teachers monitor progress and communicate when a student isn’t meeting expectations.
You’re always welcome to contact the Online Teacher or your child’s home school before a formal report, any time you’re concerned.
LATE OR MISSING WORK
Drop-boxes close — but there’s a path back
Missing work can lower a grade until it’s submitted and graded. Drop-boxes close after roughly 4–5 weeks.
To reopen one, the student completes a Drop-box Reopening Request form with the reason and a plan to catch up. The OT reviews it and responds, copying the Local Facilitator and parent/guardian. Extensions are for extenuating circumstances, not routine use.
