FAQ
Find your answer, fast.

Organized by who’s asking. If you’re new, start with the guide below — everything else is grouped by audience.
Before you email us: most questions are answered right on this page and the FAQ. Email is best kept for things specific to your own enrollment — a grade, a deadline, a technical issue only we can see.
Eligibility: NBVLC courses are only available to students registered in a New Brunswick Anglophone School District high school.

Student FAQ
Answers for enrolled students.
How do I access my course?
Log into Brightspace and open your course from the dashboard.
Do I have to log in every day?
Not required daily, but log in regularly and stay on pace.
Who can help me at school?
Your Local Facilitator (LF) — your in-school point of contact.
Is online learning self-paced?
No. Courses run 18 weeks with weekly assignments and are mostly asynchronous — structured and teacher-guided, not independent study.
Will I have to write tests or exams in person?
Some assessments may require supervision at your home school or an approved location.
What is a live assessment?
An interview, conference, or follow-up activity with your teacher — a normal part of online learning.
Are live assessments only used when AI is suspected?
No — they’re a routine part of many courses.
Can I use AI tools?
Only when permitted by your teacher or assignment instructions, and disclosed as directed.
What happens if AI is used inappropriately?
Your teacher may ask you to explain sources, reasoning, or process through conversation or a live assessment.
What should I do if I fall behind?
Contact your Online Teacher or home school right away — most often it’s missing work, not ability, and you can catch up within a few weeks.
What happens if I submit work late?
Drop-boxes close after roughly 4–5 weeks. Complete a Drop-box Reopening Request form with the reason and a catch-up plan; extensions are for extenuating circumstances.
Is registering for an AP course the same as registering for the AP exam?
No. NBVLC provides the online AP course; your home school handles the College Board exam process, local exam logistics, and any exam fees separately.
Does it matter which semester I take an AP course?
It can. AP exams are always written in May. A Semester 1 AP course ends in January, so you’ll need to keep reviewing on your own before the exam. A Semester 2 AP course runs right up to exam time, with a shorter, more compressed prep window.
Parent/Guardian FAQ
Answers for families.
What is NBVLC?
A provincial online learning program supported by the NB Department of Education and Early Childhood Development.
How do I monitor my child’s progress?
Check Brightspace regularly — Grades, Checklist, Calendar, and Announcements. Progress reports go home periodically.
How often is progress information updated?
Brightspace reflects day-to-day course activity, so it’s the best place to check in regularly. PowerSchool updates on its own official reporting schedule.
Will teachers contact me if there are concerns?
Yes — but you don’t have to wait for a report to reach out first.
Is there support at the school?
Yes, every student has a Local Facilitator.
How does NBVLC address AI use?
Work must reflect the student’s own learning; AI only when permitted and disclosed.
My child is taking an AP course — is that the same as registering for the exam?
No — NBVLC provides the online course; your home school coordinates the College Board exam process, exam-day logistics, and any related fees.
Adult Learners / Upgrading
Not currently in an NB high school?
NBVLC courses are only available to students registered in an NB Anglophone School District high school — but we may still be able to help with a course or two.
Can adults enroll in NBVLC courses?
Only students registered in an NB Anglophone School District high school qualify. Adults upgrading a course or two may still be able to get help.
I need to upgrade for college/university — can you help?
Usually 1–2 courses at most, to keep it manageable. See the current course list, or check PETL for broader upgrading programs.
Which courses should I take?
Check the admission requirements of the institution you’re applying to (e.g. UNB, NBCC) and match your courses to those.
How do I register?
Through your home/graduating school (adds to your official NB transcript), or directly with NBVLC (you receive a letter with grades and course details).
What if I need more courses, or full upgrading?
New Brunswick programs that offer some of our courses include NBCC (High School Courses) and Oulton College (Academic Upgrading Program). They offer the same content and are similarly credited.
